Elac debut 2.0 b6.2 speakers9/10/2023 ![]() So I did.Īt the same time, the 70 wpc, unrestored hk amplifier was certainly a little suspect, too - as was the passive front end. No matter, they're flat on top and about the right height to be repurposed into ELAC stands. This particular pair of Sixes, he reported, have little or no tweeter output (usually bad XO capacitors, IME - or, of course, perhaps dead tweeters). Fortunately, our son the mathematics professor came home to visit for "the holidays" bearing a pair of thrift-store KLH Sixes (the apple does not fall too far from the tree). I really don't have any better (more modern) speaker stands of any sort. Suggestions here and elsewhere made it pretty clear that the positioning I'd chosen (fairly low and angled upwards) using the "polkstands" was way off base for these. I gave 'em some time to 'break in' but nothing good seemed to be happening. At this point in my life, as a confirmed "tubes and horns" guy, I really cannot tolerate undynamic loudspeakers. They sounded listless and lifeless - and undynamic. Sort of a 1960s hifi console sound (in the worst possible connotative sense of that description). The sound was pleasant, but bloated and very rolled off. Impressions of this setup were - largely negative. I placed the ELACs on a pair of DIY (not by me - full disclosure) "polkstands' (copies of the original stand Polk Audio offered for their original Monitor 7 and 10 loudspeakers) and hooked them to the amp with some extremely generic 16 gauge copper zip cord (Radio Shack-grade). Unfortunately (and this is a big caveat for this "review" in the context of the "Doorway"!) I don't really own any good quality "modern" hifi amplifiers of broadly-recognized quality (cheap or otherwise), so I've had to improvise.įirst try: I hooked the font end of my 'real' hifi system - various sources, selected via a switch box and a passive transformer (or autoformer) volume control - to the inputs of a vintage (and unrestored) harman/kardon hk770 "twin powered" power amp (ca. So, the design parameters of these little monkey coffins is pretty much antithetical to serve as good loads for most of the amplifiers around here. The aforementioned guru did, too, interestingly Yeah, I know, de gustibus non est disputandum and all that - but when the half-price sale, popped up, I sprang for a pair. Said guru, when asked point blank about the KEF LS-50, responded that he thought these were much better sounding. I got interested in these because one of the local (Northern New England) vacuum tube hifi gurus heard 'em last spring at the hifi show in Montreal and reported (totally seriously) that they were the best sounding loudspeakers he heard at the show. This is the latest in a long (and growing) series of high value loudspeaker designs that seem to flow from Mr. The "hook", of course, is that it is designed by Andrew Jones, darling of loudspeaker design at both ends of the loudspeaker price spectrum (!) and - by all accounts, a really good guy, too. Here's the rest of the specs from ELAC's site.ĭimensions (WxHxD) : 7.69″ x 14.76″ x 10.55″ They're rated to be a nominally 6 ohm load (I haven't yet seen an impedance curve). The cabinet design is decidedly old school the genuine vinyl veneer gets a lot of snarky press, but to me they look fine and seem to be reasonably well made and well-finished (compare the ultra-cheap little Parts Express "B652-AIR", to see what a truly cheap speaker looks like). This awkwardly named little loudspeaker (the more expensive ELAC loudspeakers seem to have more aesthetic names and faces, interestingly enough) is a ported two way using (it is said) proprietary drivers and a fancy-ish crossover. The vote's still out, but, with probably about 30 hours of "burn in" time on them, and a couple of false starts, I think I can finally offer a worthwhile opinion based on what I'm hearing as of mid January 2019. ![]() I picked up a pair to see whether, at that doorway price, they were worthy Doorway loudspeakers. This is current incarnation of (I believe) the entry level ELAC two-way "Andrew Jones" loudspeaker.īefore Christmas 2018, these were on sale for $150 the pair - half of their list price. ![]()
